TV Review: The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead is an American post-apocalyptic horror/ drama series developed by Frank Darabont, this series is based on the comic book series ‘The Walking Dead’ by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard. The Walking Dead premiered on October 31st, 2010 and after eleven seasons and 177 episodes the series concluded on November 20th, 2022. Even though this show stopped being made, there are other shows in “The Walking Dead Universe” like Fear The Walking Dead. There are also spin-offs from the main show, these series follow some of the main characters and what happens after the last episode of The Walking Dead, these include, The Ones Who Live, Daryl Dixon, Dead City, and a new confirmed spin-off named The Book Of Carol. The Walking Dead is extremely popular all over the world, they have comic upon comic, video games, mobile apps and thousands of different merchandise.

The main plot of this show follows the storyline of a deputy sheriff named Rick Grimes who had been shot in a cop chase, he then wakes up from a coma weeks later and is in a state of confusion as there are no patients, nurses or doctors in the hospital, he then leaves the hospital and finds his way to his house where his wife and son are nowhere to be found. During the first 2 episodes of season one Rick meets a man and a son, named Morgan and Dwayne, they explain what has happened, how dead people are walking the earth, these dead people are called ‘walkers’. All Rick wanted to do was find his wife and son, he did not let anyone or anything get in the way of that.

During the series we follow the main group which Rick is the leader of, this group goes through many eras, the prison era, the farm era, the terminus era and so on. We meet many great characters but also have to say goodbye to even better ones. This show is full of shock, from deaths, to situations within the group to situations with other groups. The character development in characters such as Rick, Daryl and Maggie is insane. Their growth as a person and stepping up to be leaders was definitely something you’d expect. When I first started watching this show I was six years old, now I am almost nineteen and I am still obsessed with this show. I think I've seen every episode at least 50 times! This show truly feels like home to me; it's something I randomly stumbled upon that now I will never forget about. Rewatching the series, the spin-offs, trying to find the comic books, playing all of the mobile games and collecting as much merchandise I can find truly makes my soul happy.

Although this show is 99% the best thing to ever exist, there are definitely some flaws. For example I was deeply disappointed with some of the characters who were taken off the show, how specific scenes did not follow the comics and how the recent seasons were without one of my favourite characters, although those seasons were good I most definitely felt like someone was missing. The spin-offs are good but not as good as the original show. Personally I loved ‘the ones who live’ and most of ‘daryl dixon’ I was definitely not a fan of ‘dead city’ though, I found it extremely hard to get into. So now the big question ‘is it really worth the watch?’ yes it is, especially if you are into “zombies”, lots of drama, heartbreak and what life would be like after the world falls then you will most definitely adore this show as much as I do. This show is full of heartbreak, it will definitely leave you with tears and a lot of questions, I hope you love it as much as I do.
